Volunteer Opportunities

For the spring semester, you cannot "double dip" or use service hours from Key Club, NCL, YMSL, or any other organization for NHS hours.

Scheduled Volunteer Opportunities:

1.  Mid Autumn Moon Festival → Summitt Elementary is hosting their Mid-Autumn Moon Festival on Friday, September 25 starting at 6 PM. They are expecting a large turnout and are looking for a lot of volunteers to help throughout the event.

2.  Environmental Awareness Club → They are hosting a park cleanup on Saturday, September 26 from 10-11:30 am. It will be at Bull Creek and all the tools will be provided! If you’re interested all you have to do is show up at Bull Creek ready to beautify the environment!

3.  Anderson Athletes Taking Action → They are hosting a a new & used sports equipment drive from September 22–October 8 benefiting the Boys & Girls Club of the Austin Area! Donate new or gently used sports equipment to earn NHS service hours: * 2 items = 1 service hour and * 4 items = 2 service hours MAX. Donation boxes will be located in Coach Allen’s room (229) and outside the girls athletic coaches’ office next to the small gym.

4. Jester Fall Festival → Jester Elementary is looking for volunteers for their Fall Festival on Saturday, October 24! There are multiple service time slots available between 8:30 AM–12:00 PM, so sign up for whichever works best for you. Please wear a red shirt. Sign up below to help out and earn service hours!

Community Opportunities:

1. Donate Blood → If you are eligible (17 years old and 115 lbs), you can still donate blood for NHS credit. This is a great way to help the community! Donating blood counts as 2 NHS hours. **Note: This does require going out into the community, so it is important to check with your parents first. The “We Are Blood” homepage has information about donating during the Shelter in Place that you should check out. ​

2. Central Texas Food Bank → This organization fights hunger in Central Texas and they really appreciate volunteers. Sign up below:

1. Color A Smile → Color A Smile is a nonprofit organization that distributes cheerful drawings to Senior Citizens, Our Troops Overseas, and anyone in need of a smile. All you have to do is print some coloring pages and send them to the address provided. More details at the link below. If you need stamps, they sell them at places like H-E-B, Office Depot, or stamps.com.

2. Smithsonian → The Smithsonian Digital Volunteer program engages the public in making its collections more accessible. Digital volunteers transcribe historic documents and collection records to facilitate research and preserve these valuable assets for future generations. 3. Bookshare → Bookshare offers thousands of books to people with reading disabilities. As an online volunteer, you can either scan books to be added to the collection or edit books that have already been scanned.

5. Translators Without Borders → Do you know another language? Translators Without Borders recruits volunteers who want to translate texts into different languages for NGOs and nonprofits.

7. Cards for Soldiers → Cards for Soldiers is a non-profit with the mission to send handmade, blank cards and signed Christmas, Thank You, and Get Well Cards to deployed units or service members overseas for the soldiers to use to write to family and friends.
